About the chairmen


Prof. dr. J.H. Smit

In 2010 Jan Smit was appointed at the chair “Methodology of longitudinal psychiatric research. He is currently Managing Director of Research of the Department of Psychiatry at VU University Medical centre Amsterdam and director of the knowledge centre ‘Cohort Research’ at the VU University Medical Centre. He is an expert in building research infrastructures, collecting complex data among ‘difficult’ populations and non-response research. He is program manager for a number of complex longitudinal studies (see for example www. nesda.nl). He was originally trained as a Survey Methodologist. He (co)authored > 200 peer reviewed international articles and has an H-Index of 55.


Prof. dr. O.H. Klungel

Dr. Olaf Klungel is Professor at the division of Pharmacoepidemiology & Clinical Pharmacology. He was trained as a pharmacist and epidemiologist. His main research area is Cardiovascular Pharmacoepidemiology with a focus on methodology to assess the effects of cardiovascular drug therapy in daily clinical practice. He is secretary of the Mondriaan Foundation Health Research Data which aims to increase access and link health and research data in the Netherlands and co-principal investigator of the Dutch Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI-NL) Rainbowproject Biolink NL which aims to link biobanks and socio-economic and medical registries in the Netherlands. Dr. Klungel is also a member of the European Network of Centres for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance (ENCePP), the IMI-EU2P steering committee (Director of Benefit/Risk Assessment domain), the IMI-PROTECT steering committee (leader of Pharmacoepidemiology Framework), and the steering committee of the Dutch Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI-NL). In addition to his research, Dr. Klungel teaches pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacotherapy to medical and pharmacy students. He is (co-) author of over 200 papers in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and research reports.
